The U.S. Diplomatic Court Sword, matches the dress regulations enacted by the Department of State under President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State William H. Seward. While the majority of blades from this era were heavy combat sabers or regulation infantry officer swords, diplomatic swords were strictly reserved for high-ranking American ambassadors, consuls, and ministers plenipotentiary representing the Union’s geopolitical interests across European courts to prevent foreign recognition of the Confederacy. 31" triangular blade with etched panels of military motifs.  Chased guard plate with Eagle.  Chased guard and pommel.  Pearl handles.   Leather scabbard with leather frog to carry.  The frog is in two pieces but could be relpaired. Has the original gold bouillon knot.  All of the brass finished in gilt finish and still retains most of the gilt finish.  The leather scabbard is excellent condition.
