.31 caliber, 8" octagonal to round barrel, NSN. Manufactured throughout New England during the mid-1800s by prominent makers like Bacon, Cooper, or Gibbs, these unique firearms were called "boot pistol" due to its long, smooth profile that allowed it to be comfortably slipped inside a boot leather shaft. Blue barrel with cone front sight and rear notched sight. Engraved top strap near the rear sight. Marked on one of the flats of barrel "Cast-Steel". Blue under hammer. Brass band around the outer edge of the grips. The grips are nicely figured maple. The barrel retains most of the original blue finish. The hammer has most of the original blue finish. The grips show some use with an old crack in the top of the grips strap on the left side. Overall very good considering this a very hard to find collectible with a long barrel and this much finish.
