44 RF caliber, 24.5" octagonal barrel with full magazine tube, S/N 105516 (ca.1872). The Winchester Model 1866 represents the foundation of the Winchester empire, standing as the direct evolution of the famous Henry rifle. By integrating Nelson King’s revolutionary spring-loaded side-loading gate and replacing the split Henry magazine tube with a robust, fully enclosed design, the Model 1866 successfully solved the engineering vulnerabilities of earlier repeaters. The Third Model variant is widely considered by firearms historians to be the most aesthetically balanced and refined iteration of the 1866 family. Produced during a pivotal era of American westward expansion, the Third Model is distinctly identified by its re-engineered receiver frame, which features a smoother, more elegant flare where it interfaces with the buttstock. Mechanically, it represents a crucial factory milestone: it was the first variation where Winchester abandoned hidden internal serial markings in favor of a prominent, externally stamped serial number on the lower tang directly behind the trigger. This specific specimen has a front blade sight and a Henry rear barrel sight. The cut for the dovetail has been filled in all the way through the barrel markings. Blue barrel with full magazine. Brass nose cap, brass frame and brass buttplate. The barrel and magazine tube with nice even wear, smooth with a even plum brown look. The brass with nice even dark mustard patina. Stock with a repair to the toe and a old repair to the left side of the forearm. The repairs are period. The bore is good to very good. The cleaning rods are in the buttstock. An excellent example of a Western used 66.
