25-20 caliber, 27" half octagonal to round barrel, S/N 76207 (ca. 1896). A made to order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle manufactured in 1896. The genius of John Browning paired with the genius of precision barrel maker Harry Pope, make this rifle a highly desirable combination. Pope was recognized for his proprietary 8-groove with left-hand twist progressive rifling. This barrel arrangement was designed for pinpoint accuracy. A number 2 barrel with the top of barrel marked "Made to Order by The Winchester Repeating Arms Co.". Then near the breech is marked "Rifled By H.M. Pope Hartford Conn.". Under the forearm are the Pope markings "16/141" then near the breech on the bottom under the forearm is "229" and very close to the breech also the "VP" in an oval. Hooded front sight, rear vernier mid range tang sight, top of barrel with Winchester Scope mounts and a Lyman 438 field scope. Blue barrel and case colored frame. Checkered pistol grip stock with Swiss style butt. Ebony tip on the pistol grip and forearm cap. Finely checkered forearm. The barrel retains most of the original blue finish with some wear isolated to the high edges. The frame retains most of the case colors just faded lightly. Stock and forearm with minimal nicks and dings. The factory letter differs on the caliber and no mention of checkering. Overall this is a Made to Order Winchester Model 1885 High Wall with desirable Pope barrel.
