A very nice 19th-century Missouri War Axe. A prized weapon highly favored by the Native American tribes of the Upper Missouri River Basin, including the Oto, Iowa, Osage, Ponca, and Omaha. Characterized by its massive, oversized blade and relatively short handle, the Missouri War Axe was a devastating weapon of intimidation and prestige, prominently carried by high-ranking warriors and chiefs. This hand-forged iron specimen features the classic, thin, broad sheet-style blade that flares dramatically toward the cutting edge. True to the finest examples of this type, the blade is artistically decorated with a pierced bleeding heart along its face. The head features a teardrop-shaped eye socket that connects securely to its original haft. The haft is further embellished with brass tacks and sewn hide wrap matching the aesthetic of the blade. Hand forged blade mounted on a round and bent wooden haft. The well weathered haft is 19 inch length with a 8 inch blade. with weathered look and some pitting. Overall good condition with lost finish and density to the handle. A great example of this well used and authentic Native American Tomahawk.
