An authentic Colonial Period trade axe, dating to the 18th century. Referred to as a "belt axe" or "squaw axe," these hand-forged utility weapons were manufactured across Western Europe predominantly in Great Britain, France, and Germany and exported to the American colonies. They served as a cornerstone of the early frontier economy, acting as a crucial trade commodity exchanged with Native American tribes, as well as a vital piece of personal equipment carried by colonial militia, longhunters, and early settlers Having a short 4.5 inch forged blade with "LUIS" marked blade, mounted to a 15 inch wooden handle. Overall good condition. The handle has aged with age splits and very smooth finish.
