An exceptionally well-preserved and highly collectible 18th-century trade axe, a definitive utilitarian artifact from the height of the North American fur trade. This hand-forged iron head represents the crucial material culture exchanged between European traders (French and British) and Indigenous nations across the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Canadian frontier regions. Having a 9.5 inch forged blade with four illegible lettered blacksmith initials, mounted on an oak wooden handle, the blade has museum de-accession numbers L-1891-1782 in white. Overall good condition. Handle with expected age splitting throughout.
