.32 caliber, 30.25" octagonal barrel length, NSN. Dating from the mid-19th century, this custom-built half-stock percussion sporting rifle represents a high-water mark of early American precision craftsmanship. Often referred to as "plains rifles" or "target rifles," these half-stock variants replaced the long, full-stocked Kentucky/Pennsylvania styles, prioritizing a shorter, vastly more rigid barrel profile to maximize accuracy for both target competition and big-game hunting. With a patent breech and measures 1.055" across the flats. Engraved lockplate marked "Wirth & Co.". Engraved iron triggerguard with double set triggers. Engraved Iron four piece patchbox. Engraved iron buttplate. Engraved silver plate outlining the buttplate. Seven engraved pieces of Silver inlay on the stock. Fine tiger maple striped stock with raised cheek piece. The stock tip is missing for a long time showing its age. Two pieces of wood splinter out and have been missing a long time where the tip is missing. The engraving and the metal are sharp and crisp with a nice untouched blue brown look.
