30" blade with two fullers with etched panels of military panoply. The pattern 1827 infantry guard with Eagle cast in the guard. Silver spiral handle with brass pommel and Eagle cast in the top. Metal scabbard with brass bands. On the top band near the throat is the Presentation inscription: "Presented to Lt William H. Howell March 16, 1863. By the Members of Co G 89th Reg ILL Vols in token of a Officer And Friend. Stone River Dec 3 1862". He was involved in the long battle for Central Tennessee between General Rosecrans and General Bragg. Lt Howell was in command of the company after Captain Whiting was killed during the battle. The blade has been cleaned with some staining along the bottom edge and the point of the blade. The etched panels are visible but thin. The handle with nice dark patina on the brass and silver handle. The scabbard is very good with clear inscription. The chased brass fittings have nice untouched patina. The rest of the scabbard still retains its original nickel finish. Comes with a complete file on this sword.
