.565 bore diameter, smoothbore, 38" round barrel, NSN. A classic example of a New England full-stock percussion fowler, proudly sporting the lockplate signature of the celebrated Boston partnership Lane & Read. Active in the second quarter of the 19th century, Lane & Read were prominent Boston gunsmiths and dealers known for producing high-quality smoothbore fowling pieces, versatile shotguns, and militia muskets tailored for New England sportsmen. This full-length American cherry wood stock, a preference prized by New England makers for its tight grain and warm color. The cherry stock extends fully to the muzzle, providing a sleek, unbroken line that beautifully balances the weapon. Accenting the rich hardwood is a complete suite of brass furniture, including a brass buttplate, sideplate, and an elongated trigger guard. The mechanicas of the piece feature an elegantly engraved percussion lock and hammer, showcasing fine period scrollwork or floral motifs common to premium Boston commercial builds. The lockplate is distinctly and crisply stamped with the maker's mark "LANE & READ / BOSTON" .  A beautiful displayable piece of early Massachusetts history. The striking visual contrast between the rich cherry stock, the even barrel browning, and the bright brass furniture makes this an exceptional addition to any collection specializing in New England firearms, folk art, or early American hunting heritage.
