.690 smooth bore, 30" octagonal to round barrel. NSN. This extreme rarity is of the finest George III English quality throughout and equal in excellence to similar guns by the Mantons, Ezekiel Baker, H.W. Mortimer et al. The Reverend Forsyth is regarded as the inventor of the percussion system, and original guns with the Forsyth roller primer or “scent bottle” locks are of the utmost importance, rarity, and desirability. Only one other genuine example in virtually the same condition, though cased, has been sold twice. Once on November 9, 2000, at Christie’s lot 20 from the W. Keith Neal Collection and again at Bonham’s Knightsbridge on September 23, 2020, as Lot 255 (17,562.50 pounds including premium). This is the only genuine Forsyth roller primer “scent bottle” gun that has been offered at public auction in the United States, and Lewis & Grant is justly proud to present collectors with a unique opportunity to add a beautiful and historically important gun to their collection. The period re-browned barrel with silver front sight, signed on the breech, the casehardened patent breech with gold lines, finely engraved serial numbered “Scent Bottle” roller primer. Engraved tang. The lock finely engraved, unique Forsyth offset hammer engraved ensuite with the lock. Finely figured walnut half stock checkered at the wrist. Engraved blued steel mounts. Original brass mounted ramrod. Mounts, lock, and stock with much original finish.
