.36 caliber, 7.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 164668.  A desirable maritime and firearms artifact is this Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver marked PMSS CO. (Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company).  One of the most important commercial shipping empires of the 19th century, PMSS purchased these firearms privately to arm officers and security teams while on transit through lawless maritime routes. Blue finish with case hardened frame, lever and hammer.  Brass backstrap and triggerguard.  One piece walnut grips.  The backstrap is engraved with "P M S S & Co, Pacific Mail Steam Ship Co".  This revolver has been refinish many years ago during the period of use.  There are some salt and pepper pitting blending with some blue. The grips with most of the original varnish. Some nicks and dings are present. Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company was in business from 1849 to 1925.
