.31 caliber, 41" octagonal barrel, NSN. This exceptional longrifle stands as a great example of high-art American gunmaking from the era of the percussion frontier rifles. The forward-action percussion lock is clearly marked by Jas Golcher (James Golcher), a member of the legendary Philadelphia family of locksmiths whose components were highly prized for their smooth reliability and widespread distribution across the American frontier. The octagonal barrel is hand-signed with the initials "J" or "T" preceding the surname Hale. This deeply links the piece to the esteemed Hale family of master gunsmiths—such as J. Hale of New York or T. Hale—who were celebrated for combining mechanical precision with stunning aesthetic decorations. The rifle's sophisticated double-set trigger system confirms it was built as a premium, highly accurate target or hunting rifle. Masterfully stock of curly maple, displaying an intense, tight tiger-stripe grain from butt to muzzle. The wood is in excellent condition, showing incredible hand-carved detailing. Decorated with twelve individual silver inlays, offering a spectacular contrast against the dark maple. The brass furniture is extensively embellished, featuring an engraved brass sideplate, a brass trigger guard, an engraved brass toe plate equipped with a functional release button to open the patchbox lid, and a traditional brass buttplate. Engraved four-piece brass patchbox with foliate scrollwork. Lock Mechanism: Engraved forward-action percussion lock sharply marked "Jas Golcher." Traditional blade front sight paired with a rear notched barrel sight for crisp target acquisition. Double-set triggers with crisp mechanical timing. The barrel, lockplate, and hammer have aged gracefully together, presenting a beautifully uniform, smooth chocolate-brown patina. The brass and silver components retain a rich, untouched oxidation that flows evenly across the rifle. The stock is in an excellent. It features an honest, historical crack running along the right side of the lockplate. This crack has been period-of-use repair which adds immense character.
