.54 caliber, 21" barrel length, S/N 19589. The Fourth Model Burnside holds an important place in Union cavalry history by being the third most widely issued carbine of the Civil War, trailed only by the Spencer and Sharps. This specific configuration is different from the earlier models by having a small pivoting guide screw located on the right side of the receiver frame. This pin guides a redesigned hinged breechblock that drops down and tips forward simultaneously when the dual-lever trigger guard is unlatched. This modification made loading the .54 caliber brass Burnside cartridge significantly faster and by reducing jamming when in combat. Blue barrel, breech lever, trigger plate, rear barrel sight. Case colored frame, bands, buttplate. Walnut stock and forearm. The barrel retains most of the vivid original blue finish just lightly fading with a few staining spots caused from dried grease. The breech lever and trigger plate retains most of the bright blue finish. The frame and lock retain nearly all of the bright case colors. The stock and forearm with nice untouched open grained wood with a mint cartouche. The bore is bright and shiny. This is a great Burnside Carbine.
