.69 caliber smoothbore, 26" round barrel, NSN. The U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoon was developed to create a uniformed firearm for mounted troops and to replace the Hall Carbine. The Left side of the barrel near the breech marked with small "V P and Eagle". The tang dated 1851 and the rear of the lockplate marked "Springfield" and dated "1853". The front of the lockplate marked with "Eagle" and "US". Brass mounted walnut stock. Constructed with a saddle bar on the left side of the stock. The ramrod is original with a replaced Chain and retainer.  The stock is not bored in the rear for the lead counter weight.  This is a first model that probably had the original rod with swivel broken off and then replaced with the chain and retainer. Overall very good condition.  The metal is smooth and gray with some light staining.  The stock with some nicks and dings, a clear and legible "JS" cartouche.
