Manufactured under federal contract by the premier early American arms maker Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut. Following the War of 1812, the U.S. Ordnance Department sought to standardize infantry weapons, executing a contract in December 1818 with Starr for exactly 4,000 infantry NCO swords to be issued to infantry and Marine sergeants. 26" spear point blade with fuller. Iron guard with grooved leather covered handle. The blade is marked parallel to the false edge "N. Starr" over "US" over "LS" over a "V". The blade is a brown patina with sharp and crisp markings. The iron guard has nice dark patina. Overall very good example of this rare pattern N.Starr Contract sword. No Scabbard
