Celebrated for his reckless bravery during the French and Indian War and famously surviving a capture by Caughnawaga Indians, Putnam achieved immortal status during the Revolutionary War. As a commander at the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775, he is widely credited with uttering the legendary command, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes".
