.54 caliber, 36" barrel length, NSN. The U.S. Simeon North Model 1817 Flintlock Rifle, known to collectors as the "Common Rifle," is a historically significant military longarms of the early American republic. The moniker "Common Rifle" was not a slight against its quality; rather, it was the official ordnance department designation used to distinguish this standard, ruggedly dependable flintlock rifle from the experimental breech-loading Hall rifles being introduced at the same time. Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, one of America's most famous early master arms contractors, produced a batch of 7,200 units under government contract between 1823 and 1829. The barrel marked near the breech "US" over "AH" over circle "P". The breech plug dated "1829". The lock plate marked "US" over "S. North" in the rear of the lockplate and dated in the rear of the lockplate "1826". Three barrel bands and oval patchbox. Walnut stock. The barrel is sharp and crisp with traces of brown finish. The barrel bands blend well with nice untouched dark brown patina. The lock and hammer with nice mottled gray look. The stock is very good with nice opened grain look. The bore is very good.
