The Great Protector Oliver Cromwell Circa 1645. An exceptionally scarce and highly desirable matched pair of English Civil War munition-grade infantry armor, comprising a companion breastplate and backplate typically fielded by heavy infantry pikemen in the Parliamentarian New Model Army. The breastplate is of heavy iron construction, featuring a distinctively raised low medial ridge that seamlessly draws out into a blunt point just above a shallow flared basal skirt. This specialized contour was engineered specifically to glance away lethal thrusts and incoming musket fire. The neck and arm apertures are expertly finished with rolled, turned borders. To the upper breast, just below the neckline, the plate is stamped with an armourer's mark alongside a visible proof indentation. A test mark left by a contemporary pistol ball fired to prove its "shot-proof" military viability before battle field deployment.  The companion backplate is expertly shaped to the torso, finished with matching rolled, turned edges and a short flared waist flange.  The breastplate with good shot proof. Original straps are intact. Good remnants of original linen lining. The interior showing great age and untouched surface. The exterior in good condition. This ensemble will complete an armor or show well as a stand alone element of armor displayed with a lobster tail helmet from the mid 17th century.
